Where is the perfect place to stay in Surabaya?
Of course, Hotel Majapahit. This is one of our favorite hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia.
The history of this place is quite amazing – named before Oranje Hotel or Yamato Hotel, this hotel is built in 1910. With the lovely touch, this historical building is turned to beautiful hotel in the middle of the center of Surabaya. Placed in Tunjungan road, one of the central road in Surabaya, this hotel is strategic to the center of town.
With beautiful garden in the middle of the hotel, this place feels like home in the ancient mode.
Take a look at the beautiful aisle along hotel.
Also several beautiful gardens inside hotel, where you can sit in the middle of garden – if the weather is not too hot.
The details of this hotel is also amazing, made us feel how to live at past time, while we also being spoiled with the 5-star comfort facilities.
Lunch at this hotel- Indigo Restaurant is also delicious, you can try Javanese food like Soto Ayam or Nasi Goreng.
In the night, you can also enjoy sitting at hotel lobby, enjoy some coffee or apple pie, while listening the relaxing Javanese instrumental.
Talking about history of this place, for Indonesian people, this place is one of the sign of independence that they struggled from colonizer on September 19th, 1945. When the red-white-blue flag fluttered at the top of Oranje Hotel, the Indonesian youth burst out in anger and ripped the blue flag – leaving the red and white flag – Indonesian flag called Dwi Warna.
There are also another story of this place, like room no 33, that was also occupied by Charlie Chaplin when he inaugurated the hotel extension in 1936
Staying in this hotel, you can easily reach the famous local food Surabaya. You can take a walk or take a taxi to Embong Malang Road, to eat the famous Rawon Setan. You can also try another local food – Tahu Tek and Tahu Campur at Depot Legendaris.
Another unique experience that we were going through in this hotel is Parade Joeang, a local parade to celebrate “Hari Pahlawan” (National Heroes Day). Veterans is lining up in the middle of the road in front of Hotel Majapahit, tank parade, national custom parade, and also a Indonesian flag raising at the top of Hotel Majapahit – to recall historic moment of September 19th, 1945.
It’s quite amazing that even though this hotel was placed in Tunjungan road, but inside hotel we can enjoy quiet and relaxing ambience.
So, don’t forget to stay at this hotel, where you can feel the history and the relaxing ambiance in the middle of Surabaya. If you plan to see Parade Joeang, you can stay at this hotel around November 10th
