Have you ever heard about Tarsier? On OlingGO!’s visit to Manado, we visited Tangkoko-Bitung; 2 hours by road from Manado, this city is famous for animal named Tarsier. Let’s meet this cute primates!
We visited Tarsius at Taman Marga Satwa Tandurusa, at Bitung city. This animals park is managed by private sector. Our initial plan was to visit Tarsier at Tangkoko National Park, but because it was too late, we only visited Taman Marga Satwa Tandurusa. If you visit Manado and have a time to go to Tangkoko, you can visit Tangkoko National Park, where you can see Tarsier at their habitat.
Tarsier are the smallest mammals in this world, and they are nocturnal animals – animals that live at night time. But Tarsier also can live at day time. Tarsier size is very small! Adult Tarsier size is only as big as our palm! And baby Tarsier is only as big as human thumb!
Tarsier are divided into two groups : Tarsier syrichta (Philippine-Western) and Sulawesi Tarsier. Tarsier that OlingGO! visited was Sulawesi Tarsier (Sulawesi was an island where Tangkoko is located).
Tarsier has a tiny cute body, big eyes like an owl, long tail like a rat, face like a monkey and very agile jumping from one tree to another tree. Even though his body is very tiny, his leap is very fast and far!
Most of Tarsier that we saw at this park stayed silently at the trees, so cute…. When he was hungry, he jumped suddenly, and … as fast as possible he took a piece of chicken meat at food plate Once he got his food, he jumped back to his tree.
The bad news is this Sulawesi Tarsier is one of the endangered mammals based on IUCN list (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Even, one of the group from Sulawesi Tarsier – Siau Tarsier, are listed as 25 most endangered mammals in the world
Hopefully this unique animals can survive and you get a chance to meet them
